Discover the Welgevonden Game Reserve
The king of the savannah walks slowly past the game drive vehicle. Slightly further up, the male lion plops himself down in the shadow of a tree. The beautiful manes show that we are dealing with an adult lion. A bit further, the rest of the pride is also lying in the shade. These fascinating animals are inactive for the greatest part of the day. However, you wouldn’t want to encounter them on foot, because they are lightning fast if they see a potential prey. All of a sudden, you also see a herd of elephants walking in the distance. That’s right, you are on safari in the Welgevonden Game Reserve in South Africa.
Welgevonden Game Reserve
The Welgevonden Game Reserve is one of the best places to go on safari in South Africa. More than 50 different animals live in the park, including the infamous Big 5. The Big 5 consists of the elephant, the lion, the rhino, the buffalo and the leopard. However, you may also encounter rare animals like the pangolin or an aardvark here. You need to set off in the evening for this, however, because both are nocturnal animals.
Another advantage of the Welgevonden Game Reserve is that it’s completely malaria-free. It will take you about two and half hours by car to get here from Johannesburg. Keep in mind that they drive on the left-hand side of the road in South Africa. Would you prefer to fly? In that case, it will take you 45 minutes to get here.
However, the biggest advantage of the park may be the opportunity to see the wild animals up-close. Due to the limited number of vehicles allowed and the fact that hunting is forbidden, the animals are not scared off easily. A magical experience is guaranteed here.
Stay in one of the luxurious lodges
The park is of considerable size, spanning approximately 35,000 hectares. As a result of this, you don’t have to be scared of being disturbed by the neighbours during your stay. The lodges are well spread out and certainly not next to each other. You can choose from more than 20 lodges, from self-catering to very luxurious. Each lodge is furnished in such a way that you will have the genuine African feeling.
The aim of your stay in Welgevonden is, of course, to spot as many animals as possible. You will often already have a great view from the lodge of a drinking spot, for example, where lots of animals come during the day. A game drive is an absolute must as well. These are often organised in the morning or in the evening, because there is a greater chance of spotting the animals then. Whoever wants to come face to face with a rhino, for example, can book a walking safari. You should, of course, conclude a day on safari with a traditional braai at your lodge.
